For two days now, we know protests have been rocking several Sudanese cities. We are working together with Max Dana, sending emails and making phone calls to bring attention on the dire situation in Sudan following this new #SudanRevolts.
But as usual, media coverage of the demonstrations in Sudan has been scant, no coverage in France yet but we can read an article on the BBC website about the ‘riots’ in Khartoum:
At least 24 people have been killed in the Sudanese capital Khartoum in clashes sparked by cuts in fuel subsidies, medical sources say. The director of Omdurman hospital told the BBC his staff had seen 21 bodies. Three others died at another hospital. Earlier police fired tear gas at protesters. The unrest began on Monday when the government lifted fuel subsidies to raise revenue. Sudan’s economy has been in trouble since South Sudan ceded in 2011. Osama Mortada of Omdurman hospital told the BBC’s Arabic Service that 21 people sent to his hospital had died, and that about 80 were injured.
We are very concerned and worried about the situation, we hope protesters will stay safe but we fear the worst when we see Sudan government’s violent, bloody and deadly repression. Please spread the word about the ongoing situation in Sudan. You can read some of Max Dana’s tweets below, follow #SudanRevolts and as well as the Twitter accounts mentioned by Max.
We are working on a special coverage about the protests in Sudan; selected news will be featured in our next Top Stories and upcoming Newsletter. You can read all the news from our In Focus on #SudanRevolts on this page.
