Sudanese activist Hisham Ali deported from Saudi Arabia detained in Khartoum

Last week, Radio Dabanga reported that Sudanese activist Hisham Ali who was deported from Saudi Arabia, has been detained in Khartoum since May 29.

Hisham Ali has been a political activist for many years, and in 2013 he exposed the Sudanese government corruption. He also wrote about torture in Sudanese detention centers and expressed his support of the civil disobedience actions carried out in 2016 in Sudan.

Radio Dabanga writes that Ali’s cousin, Mohamed Mutasim Kabashi, said the family has not been allowed to see him ever since he has been detained. The activist, also known as Wad Galiba, was detained by the Saudi Interior Ministry on November 18, 2017, at the request of the Sudanese intelligence. He was extradited from Saudi Arabia to Sudan on May 29 this year.

Amnesty International is also very concerned by the situation of the activist, we can read on their website:

The family of Sudanese activist Husham Ali Mohamed Ali has received disturbing information that he has been injured while in detention. The Sudanese National Intelligence Service (NISS) arrested him upon arrival in Sudan on 29 May. The NISS have not allowed his family and lawyer to visit. Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience held solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression.

Radio Dabanga also indicates that after a month in detention, the National Intelligence and Security Service released Ihab Mohamed Mahjoub, El Mahi Hashim and Mazin El Amin who protested the water and electricity cuts in Port Sudan. Let’s hope Hisham Ali will be released soon as well.
